A space of your own

A space of your own

Do you have a room of your own? I recently created an office in my home. I used to work from my desk down in my dining room where I got distracted and interrupted while I was trying to write or create. I would be pulled from my mission by the dishes in the sink, the buzz of the dryer when the clothes were ready to be folded. I would be interrupted with chatter and the TV in the other room. I desperately needed a space where I could create uninterrupted. How did I do it? I live in a charming home from the early 1930s complete with small rooms with high ceilings, no wall space, radiators and non-existent closets. We have technically 4 bedrooms upstairs , but one is so small and doesn’t have a closet period, when my daughter was a baby we had a tiny wardrobe that I painted pink and beaded (so cute.) Now it houses my daughter’s and my clothes and shoes with a full length mirror, so I am lucky enough to have a dressing room. One of the bedrooms belonged to my son. He is now out of the house and for so long I kept his room exactly as he left it. After much consideration, I decided to ask him for the permission to create an office in his old room, he said “of course.” I had the go ahead to carve out a space of my own. My boyfriend had claimed the basement for his ‘man-space’ and art studio and my daughter spent her time holed up in her room...
Inner Core: How to meditate if you can’t sit still.

Inner Core: How to meditate if you can’t sit still.

Sitting still isn’t easy for everyone, but it needn’t get in the way of your internal meditation practice. Have you ever thought about why a meditation practice is important and how it affects you in your creative life or business? Quieting your mind is one way in which to assimilate your ideas and inspirations. If you’ve been super active and full of thoughts yet you’re stuck in that inspiration and idea phase, meditation is one way in which to become one with and prepare to take action on those ideas! I’m going to share a couple of my favorite ways to meditate, especially when I am feeling fidgety. Some forms end in stillness and silence and others are free and flowing.   1~ Lose yourself Ever lose yourself in a creative process? It can be playing music or running or dancing or writing… Anything that bends time. (It doesn’t count the wormhole though that you sometimes go down when you’re playing on the computer) If you play music, practice a piece so much that you can play without thinking, that is the key, doing an action without thinking. I many times write and my attention is only on the words at hand and I look up and over an hour has passed when it seemed like a few minutes. Runners and dancers often lose themselves in their physical movement.   2~ Movement/circles Hip circles (moving your hips around in a circle) swaying your body clockwise or counterclockwise, much the same motion as you would have if you were holding a baby and trying to rock it into a calm...
How to look and feel young: The Five Tibetan Rites

How to look and feel young: The Five Tibetan Rites

I recently had the pleasure of participating in a workshop on The Five Tibetan Rites, led by local yoga maven, Kim Leibowitz, and Physical Therapist Jennifer Hays, MPT. It was fun and very enlightening. We discussed the Chakra System and the subtle energy body and how by keeping that part of you healthy and clear, you can find the proverbial ‘Fountain of Youth.’ The Five Tibetan Rites are a way in which to achieve a healthy energy body, it is a discipline, practiced daily. It is easy to fit into your daily routine and I really wanted to share this information with those of you who aren’t familiar with The Rites. First of all, let’s briefly talk about the human energy body. The chakras are the power centers of the body. We have many of them, they correspond with major glands and are connected with the Meridian path through the body. Each Chakra has it’s own spin and frequency (frequencies produce colors, so each Chakra has a corresponding color.)  When your Chakras are healthy, you are healthy. When they are blocked (under-active) or over-active, there can be problems and it will affect your physical, emotional and spiritual health. In the Rites, focus is on the 7 major energy centers in the body. Subtle energy is the electromagnetic wavelengths, rates of vibration, patterns of pulsation.  Each person has unique patterns of energy that are directly related to their health and well being. Each person has a subtle body and it too can be clear and healthy, or cloudy, blocked and not as healthy and bright. The Rites also will help clear your subtle...
